Amir is one of the major characters in Khaled Hosseini's The Kite Runner. The novel shows him as a son, friend, son-in-law, and husband. In today's article, we will discuss the character of Amir as a husband.
In the novel, Amir is the son of Baba, and he leaves
Afghanistan and begins to live in the United States of America. In the USA, he
fell in love with a girl, Soraya, a general's daughter, but in the USA, her
family is dependent upon welfare and sells things in an American flea market,
where he saw her first and had love at first sight. Since then, Amir used to
find reasons to meet Soraya, but one day, General Taheri caught him red-handed
while talking to Soraya and warned him not to dare to talk with his daughter.
But Amir cannot live without Soraya anymore, so he discusses his love affair
with Baba (Amir's father). His father is delighted to hear this and asks
General Taheri for Soraya's hand for his son.
Amir proved to be a different Afghan husband:
Before Soraya married Amir, she had a dark past that
she wanted Amir to know, and that past was related to her former love affair
with an Afghan man, for whom she left her house and faced troubles and taunts
from her father and society. Besides all, Amir's love weighs on Soraya's past
as Amir is still willing to accept Soraya as his wife despite knowing her past.
At this stage, Amir proved himself a different man and accepted Soraya as his
better half.

Amir as a supportive husband:
Being a husband, Amir proves himself a supportive
husband throughout the novel. He always stands by Soraya whenever she takes a
decision. It was Amir who fulfilled Soraya's dream career of being a teacher.
Apart from that, Soraya was incapable of having
children. At that moment, when everyone was against Soraya's decision to adopt
a child, only Amir welcomed her decision and stood with her firmly.
Amir as a friendly husband:
As husband and wife, Amir and Soraya's relationship is like friendship, as they welcome each other's. Even Amir let Soraya drink. They both usually drink together in the absence of General Taheri. However, this friendly relationship is rarely seen in a husband-wife relationship. A husband, especially an Afghan husband, does not let his wife do this all, and their wives do not have such freedom.
Thus, we can say that in The Kite Runner, Amir proves
himself different as a husband. He is a friend, a supportive
and loving guy throughout the novel.
